Warning Signs

Most door problems announce themselves before they leave you stuck in the driveway. If you notice any of these, it's time to call:

• A loud bang from the garage (almost always a broken torsion spring)
• The door opens a few inches and stops, or feels heavy by hand
• Grinding, squealing, or popping sounds during travel
• A visible gap in the spring above the door
• Frayed or loose cables on either side
• The opener runs but the door doesn't move
• The door reverses halfway down or slams shut too fast

If the door is already down and won't open, don't force it. Pulling on a door with a broken spring or cable can hurt you and bend the panels.
